Interpreting is a particular skill and deals with the spoken as opposed to the written word. The Institute of Linguists renders a formal qualification which sets the standard for Interpreters in the UK. An interpreter must obtain the DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting) in order to be included on the NRPSI (National Register of Public Service Interpreters). Government, public service and commercial organisations often use this register to source interpreters who have met their high standard.

Consecutive Interpreting
 
This involves the interpreter speaking after the source-language speaker has finished speaking. The speech is divided into segments, and the interpreter sits or stands beside the source-language speaker, listening and taking notes as the speaker progresses through the message. When the speaker pauses or finishes speaking, the interpreter then provides the message in the target language.
 
Simultaneous Interpreting
 
In simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter renders the message in the target-language as quickly as he or she can formulate it from the source language, while the source-language speaker continues to speak.
 
Telephone Interpreting
 
Telephone interpreting is sometimes preferred if time or location are an issue.
